Unlike your regular cut of glass, toughened glass will break into small chunks (instead of sharp, dangerous shards). This has made toughened glass a popular choice over the years for high-impact solutions throughout the home.

Toughened Glass Cutting

Our range of toughened glass and tempered glass cutting Bristol can be ordered in any shape or size. Over 5 times tougher than your standard cut of glass, our range of toughened glass is perfect for various applications around the home & workplace such as table tops, protective screens and even beautiful glass balustrades for your staircases and balconies.

The strength of toughened glass is created by putting the outer layer of glass into compression, whilst the inner layers remain in tension. This creates a unique bond within the glass – provide increased tensile strength and a stronger bond. When searching for toughened glass cutting Bristol, it’s important to have your dimensions and shape requirements at the ready – as the toughened glass is cut prior to being toughened.

If you’ve got your dimensions and design ideas to hand, or after that perfect piece of glass for your DIY or interior design project, our expert glaziers are on hand to craft that perfect piece of toughened glass Bristol.

How is toughened glass created?

Toughened glass undergoes a heating and rapid cooling process, and unlike your regular cut of glass, it cannot be cut once it has been toughened. When creating sheets of toughened glass cut to size, the cutting must be carried out prior to the toughening process. This makes it essential to have the exact dimensions and designs prepared before ordering your piece of toughened glass Bristol, as the glass cannot be altered once toughened.

After our team of expert glaziers has cut the glass, it is ready to undergo the ‘tempering’ process. Toughening your standard piece of glass begins with each sheet being loaded into a heated furnace.  The glass is then heated to extreme temperatures of up to 650ºC – at which point the glass goes into a plastic-like state.

After the heating process is over, each piece of toughened glass is quickly cooled using a range of high-pressure air nozzles. By rapidly cooling the sheets of glass, the outer layers become highly compressed, whilst the internal layers remain in tension. This creates a strong bond between the two layers and allows the glass to perform under much greater stress and higher impacts.

What is tempered glass?

When searching for toughened glass Bristol, you may come across ‘tempered glass’. Tempered glass is another term for toughened glass, and undergoes the same toughening process. Below, we explore some of the applications and characteristics of toughened glass.

Up to five times stronger than your standard cut of glass, toughened glass can withstand much great loads and offers a high-impact solution around the home or at work. Toughened glass looks very similar to your standard cut of glass, and our expert glaziers have cut a range of toughened glass products for customers over the years.
