Frequently Asked Questions
What Services Do You Provide?
Here at Cornish Glazing, we can fit a range of windows, doors and double glazing. We can also cut glass to size, fit mirrors and cat flaps! Whatever you need, we’ll offer a quality service, suited to a wide range of budgets and homes. Every project will be completed to specification.
How Does Double Glazing Work?
A traditional double-glazed unit is a window that consists of two panes of glass that is separated by a thin layer of argon gas. This layer of gas resides between the two pans of glass and has a lower thermal conductivity than air, making it a much poorer conductor of heat. This means the heat from inside your home won’t be able to escape as easily with double glazing than single and the warm air will be trapped inside your home.
How Does Double Glazing Improve My Home’s Energy Efficiency?
Double Glazed windows are highly efficient, reducing your heat loss or gain by up to 30% when compared to single-glazed windows.
Does Double Glazing Help With Sound Insulation?
Double Glazing doesn’t only help keep your home warm and cosy, but it will also block out unwanted sound due to the layer of gas between the glass panes. The gas is denser than air, meaning that it will block out the noise and act as an invisible shield. Noise pollution can be extremely distracting and can seriously disrupt the amount of enjoyment you have at home, so this is a feature that shouldn’t be overlooked!
Can Double Glazing Add Value to My Home?
Double Glazing is an excellent way to increase the resale value of your home. When you choose double glazing, an older house can become just as desirable to the purchaser who wants to ensure that the house they are buying is efficiently insulated.
When Does Double Glazing Need Replacing?
If you’re unsure whether your windows need replacing, some of the signs you should look out for are:
- Feeling a draught through the window
- The windows are leaking or letting water in
- The windows allow excessive amounts of noise in
- The uPVC around the windows are yellowing or the timber is starting to crack
- There is visible damage, particularly to the window seals
- The windows have become difficult to open, close and lock or they are sticking when you try to open them
- The windows are covered in condensation, particularly between the panes of glass.
If you notice any of these signs and signals, be sure to give us a call on 0117 966 6540. Having properly working double glazing is vital for any home.
Do I Need Planning Permission Before Installing Windows and Doors?
You do not usually need planning permission to replace existing windows or doors, though you will need to check which your local council to make sure. It’s especially important to check whether you are located in a conservation area, as this may restrict you with what designs or materials you are allowed to replace with existing windows with.
